Speedtest is a great(and free) utility that will let you measure the download and upload speed for the network you’re on(both Wireless or WiFi).

Haven’t checked it, but the reviews for this say that it’s only accurate if you’re in Canada – UK people get completely wrong information back.
Well this app works in UK and i think its simple, easy to use, original idea (i think), and is free. It quite interesting to see how fast your internet is if your a geek and isnt one of those toys or free utilities you download then never use. I would say you might as well download and try it out yourself to see if it works – it IS worth the download
