Advanced English Dictionary & Thesaurus is yet another dictionary application in the App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This one actually includes a thesaurus though, which is at least something to help it stand out from the rest.
Advanced English Dictionary & Thesaurus comes with every feature you would expect from a dictionary application on the iPhone. Then again that’s where it fails. With dozens of dictionary applications in the App Store there has to be at least one major feature to stand out from the crowd.
A feature I would like to see is the ability to hear the word(over the iPhone’s speaker) that you’re looking up. It does a good job of showing you how to pronounce it, but being able to hear the word would be optimal for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Right now at $3.99 that is a decent price to. I say decent because there are some that are free(with less features) but there are some that are way more expensive(with less features as well).
I’m sure this is the best English dictionary for mobile devices. The word coverage is excellent, apart from the ‘normal’ English words it also contains extremely rare words and expressions, dates, biograpy, geograpy, medicines, diseases, technical words and so on. It’s almost an encyclopedia. The related words (more specific, more general words for each result) feature is sooo unique and useful. I’ve never seen this feature in other dictionaries so far. And the user interface is simply beautiful. It’s highly recommended! 5 out of 5 stars.
Advance English Dictionary (AED) is a good dictionary. But for the price, there is better value, WordBook English Dictionary & Thesaurus. With the same content (WordNet database), WordBook has more features that AED don’t have: audio pronunciation, etymology, spell check, crossword solver… The interface is slick, easy to use. I even use WordBook much more than other brand name dictionaries I got ( I owned 4 dictionaries including AHD and Oxford).
I would like to know whether this dictionary works only on iphone or any other phone like Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. If so please specify the model nos. and what is the procedure to install this dictionary. Iam seriously looking for this kind of dictionary on my phone, I will be grateful if you can give me the details. Thank you and awaiting your reply.
