Silent Island Relaxation is a collection of nature sounds collected and put into this application to help relax you. From ocean waves to chopping a log for firewood, this application is sure to calm you down.

There are a few of these application in the App Store, and I think they are great for meditation assistance. Using this application to help drown out the other background noises increases the effectiveness of meditation(by allowing you to concentrate more/easier).

When I go to Florida, I love to sit out on the balcony and just fall asleep while listening to the waves crash again and again. With Silent Island Relaxation I can now do this every night. I don’t think it’s loud enough with the speakers in the iPhone. . .and I couldn’t fall asleep with headphones, but I do have a dock, and using that makes it easy to listen and fall asleep.

There are over a dozen different sounds(20 I believe) ranging from ocean waves, seagulls, island stream, at the beach, wood chopping, walking the beach, thunderstorms, shells, sea storm, birds, blizzard, wind, rain, waterfall, campfire, at night, underwater and more.

The application comes with a timer setting(to the right of the sound) so you can pick the sound effect and then set a timer(like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15 minutes, etc). This way you don’t wake up in the middle of the night to it. . .or even in the morning(before you’re supposed to wake up).

It also has a day/night setting(the top right icon) that lets you change the image to a day or night time setting. This doesn’t do anything to the sounds, but if you like to stare at the screen, now you can interact with it.

Meditate Now! helps you calm down and teaches you the proper methods of meditating for specific reasons(sleeping, calming down, diet, etc).

While Meditate Now! doesn’t come with a bunch of things, they do include a good sample. So if you’re interested in sleeping, chilling out, diet, inner peace, studying, healing, golfing, or getting over something then this application is for you.

I like the idea of meditating, and while I can’t force myself to sit quiet and think to myself. . .I am happy to listen to soothing music and just calming down in general.

I think it would have been smarter to include these specific features(with the voice over). . .but I also think they should eliminate the voice over and let users JUST listen to soothing background music. That way they can think to themselves and mediate about whatever they want.

When you pick a menu item, the application will go into ‘media player mode’ and play an audio track. There aren’t any visualizations or anything(which I think could also improve this application as well), it just plays an audio track. The sounds are very soothing, and the fall asleep one really made my eyes get heavy and get sleepy(I’ve been yawning during this entire review). . .but sometimes the voice over can be annoying(again removing this vocal track as an option would be perfect).

iStayFit is a fully customizable workout/exercise log that you can keep on your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can now keep track of every exercise you do, your progress, and many other things with the application.

Enter your weight and begin the program. . .and then every time you workout you can tell the application what you’re doing, how many reps, how much weight, and any other details about the exercise. It will keep track of what you do, how much you do, and how much weight you lose(or gain) and show it to you in an nice and easy to see graph.

The application comes with over 100 exercises included and dozens of preset workouts to do for particular body parts. Each exercise comes with a visual(moving) diagram to show you how to properly perform it. If you don’t perform the exercises correctly then they won’t workout the body parts they’re supposed to(or as good as it’s supposed to).

There are a lot of exercise/workout applications in the App Store. While this is a great and easy to use one, I think they could improve it a lot. The ability to add workouts/exercises would be nice. BMI calculator would be useful. And the devs could probably localize it to for some other countries(not everyone uses pounds for weight) to increase sales as well. Maybe we’ll see this in a future update though?

Points is a reference guide to Acupuncture points all over your body. You can look at an image of a human body with the points plotted out and then flip it over like a flash card and read about that specific point.

Learn everything from the names of the points(in both english and chinese), all 361 points(and full details about them), and even zoom into the image to find the exact location of the point.

If you’re into acupuncture then this application could be very useful. I would imagine that unless you do it for a profession, or are in school learning about it, then the 6 dollar price point really wouldn’t be worth it.

iWatchr is a calculator for Weight Watchers, that lets you find out how many points your food is equal to. It also logs your daily point totals so that over time you can see your progress and find out what you should and shouldn’t continue eating.

iWatchr comes with calculators for both America and Europe, and while I’m not sure why they had to give each one their own tab, but I guess that adds to the usability. To add an entry, you have to touch ‘New Day’, which adds a day to the history log, and then go into that day and touch ‘Edit’. Touching the edit button brings down other buttons for adding food for breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc.

To find out how many points you just ate(with your last meal), just go to the American or Euro tab, and then input the calories, fat, and fiber. Right along with a food to point calculator, there is also an exercise to point calculator. Here you can input your weight and how long you worked out, and it will give you a bonus score to help balance out your calorie intake.

While there isn’t any mention of Weight Watchers anywhere inside this application’s description, I believe this is because it isn’t an ‘official’ application from them.

Weightbot will help you record your daily weight and monitor each change that happens. Whether you’re trying to lose weight(or reach a target BMI) or trying to gain weight, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on how much you weigh.

Weightbot is a well polished that does what it’s supposed to, and does it well. When you first open the application it asks you for your target weight and how tall you are. After setting this up and looking over the rest of the settings you can enter today’s weight into the application. It will remember this each time you put in your weight, and then you can look at your overall graph simply by turning the device on it’s side(landscape mode). It will then plot out the points on a graph and show your progress since you started using the application.

Weightbot looks great and works better. The application takes a while to scroll to your destination(to set your target weight or current weight). Depending on how much you weigh, it could take a long time to scroll.

Other than that I love the application. Even though it’s ultra simple, you can tell the developers took their time and make an application they can truly be proud of.

NoPeanut is for anyone with a peanut allergy or anyone that has friend or family member with a peanut allergy. Instead of having to guess or ask an employee if an order has peanuts(and related products) or processed on equipment that’s shared with peanuts.

There are 3 main things you can do with this application and 2 of them are for six total languages.

So if you’re in another country you can pick that language in the application and do 1 of two things. One is a warning for the employee/cook, telling them about the allergy in their native language. The other is for an emergencies in case you to ingest something contaminated with peanuts and you need help fast(but cant ask yourself). Again just pick the language and show it to someone who can help.

The other mode is for prevention, and it comes with 2 options. One is Best Choices, and it gives you a list of Fast Food restaurants to check on. The other is Menu Choices, and it lists more common fast food places, and lists everything in that restaurant that has peanuts in it.

You need to be sure to touch the ‘All’ button when looking for a big list of fast restaurants. It defaults to favorites, and that makes it look like it only comes with 5-6 places(when it really comes with more than 50. This application isn’t for everyone, even everyone with a peanut allergy. But if you’re tired of asking if someone’s product has peanuts in it, then you will love this application.

BMI-Calc lets you calculate your BMI(body mass index) by setting the height, weight, and age. You can also tell it your goal BMI and your height, then it will tell you the weight you have to be before you get to your goal BMI.

BMI-Calc comes in a bunch of different languages(English, German, Japanese, and Spanish) and lets you configure the weight and height system as well. This way you don’t have to go and convert your height and weight before calculating your BMI

I have not been a fan of calculators in the App Store, especially when the developers charge you money for it. I would understand if it was some huge and complicated formulas, but these calculators for BMI, Units, Interest, Tips, etc aren’t worth paying for. . .not matter how pretty and elegant they are. Yes they are useful to some people, but in the end you’re better off just opening the calculator or use Google for a free calculator(there are plenty on the web).

iCycle lets you track the menstrual cycles of multiple women in your house, at work, or anywhere else that you might want to tip toe around during those ‘bad days’ during the month.

This is also useful for women so that they know exactly when their period is coming. But from the way the application is setup, it’s obvious that the application is geared toward men that want to track women. Even in the description it tells you to use this application to ‘prevent arguments and misunderstandings’ and even tells you which days you have the best chances to get laid(statistically).

You can track multiple women too. Just add a name, the numbers of days in the cycle, first day, and length. Then you will get a ‘widget’ on the list screen that will tell you when it’s ok and when to be careful.

Gym Buddy is a completely customizable workout journal. You can not only keep track of every workout that you do(both reps and weight) but you can also setup your own individual workout schedules.

They let you personalize it a little bit with different color schemes(themes), and you also have a full page of settings to customize it to your liking.

Gym Buddy gives you an easy to use template to monitor the kind of workout that you do. Instead of having to carry around a notebook with a pencil/pen and write down the workout you do. . .or even a pad size notebook which would only make it hard to read/write on. With Gym Buddy you can just go through the list of workouts and as you finish one you can input how many reps you did(and the weight too).

Gym Buddy also keeps track of your history so you can try to do better than last time or use last months stats or at least give you a goal to aim at for this workout.

iWorkout is like your own personal fitness expert. It comes with over 100 videos for all of the workouts included in the application. It also comes with ‘Metronome Exercies’ that encourage you to do 5 different workouts to the beat of a metronome.

This lets you do your workouts in the correct and most professional way possible. Doing your workouts too quickly or too slowly can diminish the results that you should get. . .and this will help you do those correctly.

It also comes with an Instruments tab that currently only has a Pedometer, but the developer says that more instruments will be added in future updates. On the end we have a diary that can be used to help track specific workouts for a particular day or just any random thoughts/comments that you might have about your workouts.

Close Call lets you create a custom wallpaper with a phone number and a short message in case of an emergency. That way if something bad happens, they can take out your iPhone and find your emergency contact information just by checking the ‘lock screen’.

I like the idea of this application, but I just don’t know how many people will go through your iPhone if you get in an accident. Thankfully if they do, they don’t have to go through and look for the information. . .it will be the first thing they see.

The application did freeze when I first attempted to take a picture and use it. . .but after a quick restart this was resolved.

My Emergency Info is a way to inform people(like doctors) of your medical history(and personal information). Which is great if you are sick or hurt and are unable to tell them yourself. Add things like your contacts, blood type, allergies, prescriptions, medical history, and insurance information.

The application puts everything together rather well. . .you can even use it to find the closest hospital if something bad ever happens. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to add all of your information(depending on how much you have to add) but then it’s there, forever. Then if anything new happens or needs to be added you can simply go into the application and add what is needed.

iDream Lite is the free version of iDream. In this version you get 3 sounds(where you get 25 sounds in the full version). So now you can test out the application and see if you like it enough to get the full version.

I am a fan of developers releasing lite versions of their applications. It’s nice to be able to test a piece of an application before you buy the full version. This one comes with 3 sounds, but if you want more you can get 25 in the full version.

Fit Phone is a visual fitness manager for the iPhone and iPod Touch that lets you monitor and log all of the exercises that you do during your workout. It logs it with the date, and you can pick a name(like upper body, lower body, etc). . .and you can add the exercises while you workout.

I’m not sure exactly how many exercises it comes pre-loaded with, but if there are some that aren’t listed, you can easily add them(and even create your own categories). Also, if you don’t like a certain exercise listed, then you can remove it so you don’t have to scroll past it all the time.

The features that make this application more ‘visual’ than just a plan exercise log is the last tab(reports). Here you can charts, graphs, lists, and even email the data to yourself(or a trainer).

iDream is yet another ‘sound generator’ application that use can use to help meditate, sleep, or just calm down in general. iDream comes with 25 high quality sounds from a campfire, log cabin, serengeti, a train and more.

This one goes a step further and supports 4 total languages and has a hand full of setting that you can go through to configure it just how you like. After you pick a sound it goes to the ‘visualization’ tab and scrolls through different colors on the screen.

A good note is that the developer seems to be updating it with new sounds(the latest update got it up to 25). So I would hope that this will continue. . .the only down fall is the size of the application. With the current amount it’s almost tipping the 100MB mark. Other applications like this one allow you to remove the ones you don’t like(maybe this will be included in a future update).

Mediquations is a medical calculator reference guide. Here you can quickly find medical equations for many different things. It comes with a huge list of over 90 equations with an easy to use favorites list.

This is made by a medical student and is meant to be used by professionals. . .but who knows, maybe you need to ‘remember the properties of the Glasgow coma scale’.

I figured a good way to explain what this application does is with the pregnancy equation. Simply enter the ‘variables’ into the application, and then you will see results in the lower section.

If at anytime you don’t want the application to do the calculation for you, then you can scroll to the bottom and hit the ‘more info’ button. Here you can see the actual equation used to calculate the results.
