Frontpages is a worldwide newspaper browser. You’re presented some default newspapers on retro wooden shelves but if you want something more obscure(like a local newspaper), just hit the search tab and you can browse(or search) through hundreds and hundreds of newspapers.

Once you like a newspaper you can ‘bookmark’ it and then it will be on your shelve when you first open the application. Selecting a paper will show you the front page of the paper. You can’t read anything while it’s zoomed out so you have to use the multi-touch to zoom in.

I had a couple of issues with this application
– It can be difficult to read(even when zoomed all the way in)
– It switches back to ‘shelve view’ if I don’t zoom in and let both fingers go at the same time(since one touch switches it)

Other than that I thought it was very cool to have access to all of those newspapers. . .even though you only get the front page of them.

sebNews is a very good RSS reader for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Feed items are very well organized by either the specific feeds or just unread feeds. Then when you start reading through them you get a nice view of the titles separated by the publish date.

The only downside to this application(other than it not being free) is that you can’t import your RSS feeds. You can use your bookmarks to pull the RSS feeds. . .but not with an OPML file. However, when you do add the feeds, you are able to set the name of the feed. I like this because some of the default names for RSS feeds are not the best.

When browsing you can read the first paragraph of the item and do 1 of 2 things. You can either load the page in MobileSafari or you can use the Web Preview feature. I like this web preview feature because I don’t want to have to wait for the application to close. . .then wait for MobileSafari to open and load the page. . .then have to close MobileSafari and re-open sebNews and find the spot you were just at.

This application used to be called Diggerific(as you can tell by the video below). But it seems that the infamous Digg Lawyers have attacked and forced the developers to change the name. Also I’m pretty sure this application used to be free(now I see it costs $0.99).

This application lets you access the front page(or specific categories) of the website Digg.com. Instead of opening Safari and going to the website, now you can access the stories from a native application.

You can read the summary and comments for the stories. . .and even go to the page in Safari(to read the entire article).

We all want to be able to interact with these stories(digg, comment, bury). . .but sadly the developers say we can’t(Digg doesn’t allow it).

Maybe the popularity of this application will spark an official Digg app from Digg themselves.

ABA Journal lists the latest news from the ABAJournal.com website(which is a law news website).

They give you the ability to bookmark or send a specific article right from within the application. Touching the favorites icon on the main screen will take you to a list of your favorites where you can move and delete them at will.

The New York Times application is a great application if you want to keep up with the latest news, gossip and photos. There are many categories, which include Business, Science, Economy or even Opinion which features many editorials.

The layout of the application is quite simple to use. When opening the app, it takes you to the main screen which has all of the latest news. Of course an internet connection is needed to keep all of the news up to date. But the news is updated every few hours, so you will always be able to see the latest headlines on the go. The app also has a search button, which you can search for keywords and it will show you a list of all of the news stories corresponding to that word. This is a great feature if you’re looking for specific news.

Each story also features a picture about the news story, which is a useful if you want to be able to see what the story is talking about before you read it. Once you touch on a story and get into the full story, you have the option to change from portrait to landscape by tilting your device to either side, and then the story will format itself to the side just in case you need the text size to be bigger. Advertisements are displayed at the bottom of each news story, but this is only a minor setback to the application as you can pretty much still see all of the information.

There is also a ‘Photos’ mode that you can look at just the pictures from the available news articles. . .and then pick which ones you want to read about.

When you click the ‘More’ button at the bottom, you are given a list of all categories. If you then click edit at the top right, you’ll be taken to a Configure mode. Here you can customize the shortcut categories at the bottom.
