Pause App Download [iPhone Tip]

In the recent update to the iPhone firmware Apple has given us the ability to pause an application downloading from the App Store. This is great in case you’re downloading a very big app and must go somewhere that doesn’t have WiFi.

To do this simply tap on the application icon while it’s downloading and you’ll see the text change to ‘Paused’. When you’re ready to resume this download touch the icon again and you’ll see the text revert back.

DFU Mode [iPhone Tip]

The most popular way to fix a ‘bricked’ iPhone or iPod Touch is by putting it into DFU mode. This is tricky, but it will solve that pesky stuck Apple logo on boot.

To do this you need to turn your device off. When it is completely off, push and hold the power button. Count to 5 and then push and hold the home button(keeping the power button pressed down still). Count to 10 and then let go of the power button(keeping the home button pressed down). Count to 30 and you should hear some notification that the device has been put into DFU mode. Now you can restore it in iTunes.

Each time I thought I ‘bricked’ my iPod Touch, this has fixed it.

Recovery & Restore Mode [iPhone Tip]

Sometimes you need to ‘reset’ your device with a fresh install of the OS. One way to do this is by putting your iPhone or iPod Touch into Restore/Recovery Mode and then restoring it from iTunes.

To do this you will need to turn your iPhone or iPod Touch off. . .then while it’s off, hold the home button and then plug in the USB cable. You will then see the ‘restore mode’ screen so you can then restore in iTunes.

You might ask yourself, but isn’t there a restore button in iTunes, can’t I just click it and let iTunes restore it. Yes, you can. . .but sometimes you could get an error during the restore process. This is a way to get past those errors.

Scientific Calculator [iPhone Tip]

Not many people know that you can get advanced features with your calculator simply by turning it sideways.

You can turn it either way(left or right) and you’ll see the calculator go into landscape mode where you see your extra features/buttons.

WiFi IP [iPhone Tip]

When you need to SSH into your iPhone or iPod Touch you need to find out your local IP address. Here I will show you how to do this.

Go into the Settings application, then into Wi-Fi, and then touch the small blue badge for the network you are connected to. Here you will see an ‘IP Address’ field where your current IP is displayed.

Scroll to Top [iPhone Tip]

After reading an article(or email) I hate having to scroll back up to the top. . .just to read another. Thankfully Apple has solved this issue for us(in most applications).

It’s easy too. Simply touch the ‘status bar’ at the very top of the screen(this is where the time is). When you’re in MobileSafari and the Mail application you will automatically scroll back up to the top of the page(or email).

This even works in some 3rd party applications from the App Store. So if you ever catch yourself scrolling back up. . .try this little tip.

Home Button [iPhone Tip]

The home button can have a few different uses. For iPod Touch owners you can use it to quickly play/pause the music and even control the volume. iPhone owners gets a choice as to what the home button does exactly.

To activate this short cut all you have to do is double tap the home button. It’ll either bring up music controls, take you to the home screen, or take you to your phone application.

Auto TLD [iPhone Tip]

To make things quicker, you can sometimes get away with not putting in the TLD for a domain name. This doesn’t work all the time(depending on the popularity of the website), but it gets it right most of the time.

You have to have Google set as the default search engine for this to work. After this is set, you can just put ‘apple’ into the browser, and press Go. . .it’ll automatically take you to the Apple.com website.

Other TLDs [iPhone Tip]

Not everyone has a .com domain name and thankfully Apple has included a feature that makes it easy for you to put those other TLDs into Mobile Safari.

You can bring these other TLDs up by touching the ‘.com’ button and holding it there. After a second you’ll see the ‘.net’, ‘.edu’, and ‘.org’ domains.

Screenshot [iPhone Tip]

With the 2.0 firmware update Apple gave us a quick and easy way for everyone to take a screenshot of your screen. This is great if you want to show a friend/forum a high score or something like that.

All you have to do is press and hold the Power button, and then immediately press the home button(letting go of both buttons). You’ll see the screen flicker and then go back to normal. This screenshot is saved in your photos application so you can access it there.

iPhone Tip – Save Image in Safari

Ever come across that image in Safari and wish you could save it for later use(maybe a wallpaper) or email it to a friend? Here I will show you exactly how to do that.

When you see an imagine you like, simply touch and hold your finger/thumb on that image(make sure not to move). After a few seconds you’ll see a menu pop-up from the bottom asking if you want to save it.

iPhone Tip – Safari Auto Zoom

Apple proudly boasts their two finger two finger zoom technology with the iPhone and iPod Touch. But did you know that you can automatically zoom into a column while viewing a website?

Double tapping on an area of a website(like with text), will make Safari zoom right down to the specific width of that text column. This makes things much more specific and makes it much quicker to begin reading a site.

iPhone Tip – Organize Apps

One of the first updates to the iPhone gave us the ability to move our applications around changing the default order. Now you can not only move them around but also make separate pages for specific things. You can keep your pages organized by having 1 page for media applications and one page for photo applications(and so on).

Just touch and hold any application icon and then you’ll see all of the applications start to wiggle. Now go and touch the application that you want to move slide it wherever you want(even onto another page).

iPhone Tip – Mass Delete & Move Emails

With a firmware update Apple fixed a huge problem with deleting(and moving) bulk emails. Now easily move or delete as many emails that the application can list.

When you open the email application you should see an Edit button at the top right. Then you’ll see the emails shift to the right with some spots that you can check on the left. Check the ones you want to delete/move and then touch the delete/move buttons at the bottom.

iPhone Tip – Keyboard Slide

Even though the touch keyboard is versatile. . .it still takes time to bring up the 2nd set of characters/numbers and then go back to the regular letters. Here I will show you how to automatically go back to your regular keyboard to continue typing.

Instead of touching the “123″ button, then touching the character(or number), then touching the “123″ button again. You can simply touch the “123″ button and slide to whichever character(or number) you want. Then when you let go it automatically switches back to the letter keyboard.

iPhone Tip – Alternate Characters

Since Apple decided to use the screen for it’s keys, this gave them the ability to add variations of characters.

When this is available for a letter(it’s not available for all of them) all you have to do is touch and then hold the letter. After a few seconds a row of alternate letters will appear for you to pick from.

iPhone Tip – Quick Reset

A few times(especially during the 2.0 firmware) where my iPod Touch would get stuck on boot(at the apple logo). All it would do is freeze and get hotter and hotter. The one thing that saved me was that a few times if I continue to force the iPod to shut down(a few times) then it would eventually start up correctly.

To do this all you have to do is hold down the power button and the home button at the same time while the device is turned on. While you hold this you will see the ‘slide to power down’ notification but don’t let go. A few more seconds and you will see the screen turn off and the entire iPhone or iPod Touch will shut off.

iPhone Tip – Period and Space

To quickly end your sentence and start a new one Apple gives us this trick that inserts a period, then automatically adds a space and auto capitalizes the next letter.

When you want to end a sentence and do this, just double-tap the space key. This will insert the period, and get you ready for your next sentence.

iPhone Tip – Page Left and Right

Some people love sliding their finger across the screen to get to another page of applications. Some people have so many apps installed that they get tired of doing that. Thankfully Apple lets us go from page to page with only one touch.

When you get enough applications to fill up multiple pages you see some dots at the bottom of your screen(right above the dock icons). The dots represent ‘pages’ of icons, and they make the active page brighter than the others.

iPhone Tip – Manually Delete Videos

Apple gave you the ability to delete individual applications directly from your iPhone or iPod Touch, and you can do this for videos too.

To manually delete the videos all you have to do is slide your finger across the video(like you would delete an email). You’ll then see a red ‘delete’ button, pressing this button will bring up a confirmation menu. Confirm and the video is gone!
