Sync in a Blink lets you work with your contacts on your iPhone and in your Gmail account. Just setup your Gmail details and press 1 of 2 buttons.

So with Sync in a Blink you can either ‘Clear Your Gmail Contacts’ or you can ‘Merge Your iPhone and Gmail Contacts’. This is done with a simple press of a button(after you setup the login details).

I was shocked when the iPhone didn’t allow you to sync your contacts with Gmail directly out of the box. Then again I’m also shocked that I still can’t use all of the Gmail features(like labels and signatures) from directly inside the default email application(or at least a custom application specifically designed for Gmail).

The simplicity of the application is what makes it shine. Having the ability to keep all of my contacts in sync(when there are lots of changes for work contacts, and even personal ones).

Sonic Vox lets you add sound effects to your voice in ‘real time’ right when you talk into the device. There are 5 different effects you can do to your voice. . .and you’re able to tweak each effect to get it just right(like the pitch).

The icons at the top change the effect, you can pick between Cylon, Cat, Baby, Robot, Grumpy, etc. After you pick which effect then you can change the effects by sliding up/down/left/right on the screen. When you do it you’ll see the visual effects change(like color and size) to show you that it’s actually doing something(without having to test it).

To prevent feedback, you can’t talk into the standard mic and listen to the effects. Instead you have to hook up some headphones and listen to how the effects change your voice. However, you can connect an external mic and then listen to the effects from the speaker(so everyone can hear). Another downfall to this application is that you can’t change your voice and talk to someone on the phone(with the voice effects). So you can really only use this for your own personal enjoyment.

And even so, it’s still fun to hear what your voice can sound like.

Say Who Pro is a voice dialer for the iPhone. You can simply talk into the application and have it dial a contact, number, and map search(both streets and businesses).

With a microphone you would think Apple would insert voice recognition for voice dialing contacts, map searches, to launch apps, etc. Instead Apple let the 3rd party developers do this and this is just one of them.

There are plenty of voice dialing applications in the App Store, but this is the first that integrates the google maps into it(which is awesome). I had a couple issues with the street part, but I think that’s because it was in another city. When I did a business search and even dialing contacts, it worked flawlessly.

The application uses internet servers to do the voice recognition. I expected this to make the application very slow while waiting for it to upload the audio sample and then download the results. Instead it was very fast and very responsive. It does take about 5 seconds to ‘initialize’ when you first open the application. . .and this does suck when all you want to do is call someone. . .but it isn’t the worst thing in the world. I mean it took 3-5 touches on the screen before you could dial a phone number when the iPhone first came out. Hopefully this application will improve over time just as the core OS did.

View Source lets you access any website and look at the source code for it. This is great when you want to get the HTML code for a specific element on a website. It comes with 2 modes so you can view the source and view the website normally.

While you’re viewing the source you can email it to yourself if you’re on-the-go and want to do something with it later(and you don’t want to forget about it). Touching the button at the top right(right beside the URL bar), will flip the page over and view the actual website(as if you’re viewing it in a regular web browser).

View Source does one thing(since you really don’t need another web browser) and it does it well. Not many people will need this feature on their iPhone and iPod Touch, but if you do. . .now you can! Just know you can get this same feature on your desktop for free(if you can wait until you get back to the house to get the source code).

RCLogbook lets you keep track of your RC cars, boats, planes, helicopters, etc. as well as the batteries that you use for them. Keep track of how much juice is in the battery so you don’t run out and crash your plane in the middle of a flight, or lose your boat in the middle of the lake.

While this application lets you keep track of all your RC cars, boats, planes, and helicopters that you own, I think the big feature here is the ability to log how much you use it, and let it tell you how much your battery has left. . .and how many recharges it has left before it can be called ‘dead’. It’s a cool idea to be able to find out how many times a certain helicopters has been flown or how many hours you’ve driven on your RC car. But I think the key feature is for monitoring the batteries.

This won’t be an application that floats to the top of the Best iPhone Apps list, but it does fill a need in a small niche, and that’s really where the iPhone App Store shines. . .there’s at least one application out there for everyone.

DTMF Dialer lets you dial phone numbers without having to physically dial them on the phone you’re dialing from. That may sound odd at first but it is more of a party trick than a useful application. Just like your phone makes tones when you press a button this app will emulate those tones.

This is what the ‘phreakers’ would do back in the day to pay phones when they wanted to make a free phone call. This was fixed and the majority of the ‘modern phones’ don’t support DTMF tones anyway. It would be very useful though if you knew of that one pay phone that it still works on though.

Big Keyboard Email lets you type out an email in landscape mode instead of doing it in portrait mode. The application lets you type out everything except who you want to send it to. Then when you’re ready you can pick from your contacts or manually type in the recipients.

It even comes with a menu that lets you insert emoticons and other icons into the email. Change the font color, size, text/html and warnings all from inside the application before it’s send to the default email application.

I don’t know why Apple didn’t enable landscape mode for email(and every other application) but now there is a market for applications like this. It’s not a bad thing(I love the application) but it’s funny that Apple missed out on such a huge feature.

TouchDial lets you call your contacts without having to dial them. All you have to do is touch the screen with 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 fingers and TouchDial does the rest.

Once the application has been configured. . .when you start the app you will feel it vibrate and then you have 2 seconds to touch the screen(the time lapse is configurable). So when you touch the screen with 1 finger it will dial the contact that you have it configured for 1 finger, and the same for 2 fingers, 3, fingers, 4 and 5.

You can also set it up so that it will automatically dial someone if you don’t touch the screen at all(0 fingers). It’s a unique take on a speed dial application, but it does work.

HTML Colors lets you experiment with color schemes on your iPhone, before you implement them into your website or project. Pick both a font color and background color to see how it looks.

You can either manually go in and pick the font color and background color, or you can pick the ‘lucky’ option and let it pick random colors for you. That way you can let the application pick for you, and then if you like the colors you can grab the HTML codes for them.

Whether you’re a web designer or just love art, this is a great way to experiment with color schemes for your projects.

ASCII Chart is just that, an ASCII chart that displays every single ASCII character that you can create. From non-printable characters, to normal characters, and even extended characters, ASCII Chart gives you everything you need to know to recreate those characters on your computer.

You can look at the full chart, but you can also break it down into sections(normal, extended, etc). This way it’s a little easier to read and understand. You can also go into the settings and change how the charts are displayed with normal or large fonts. . .or displaying the column labels.

The application doesn’t do much else, but it is nice to have all of these in one spot and on your iPhone so you can have them right at your fingertips at any time of the day.

Thief Alert will sound off alarms when someone tries to pickup/steal your iPhone. It comes with 9 backgrounds or you can pick your own to use. Just enable the application(so the background is showing) and the alarm is set.

You have to enable the application for it to work. . .and you can’t lock the device while it’s active(for it to still work). But at least they give you the ability to set your own background.

This is a great application if you work with people that just can’t(or don’t) respect your property(especially if your iPhone is a prime target for pranks).

Sadly this doesn’t work with the 1st generation iPod Touch. I mean it does work, it’s not like you’ll get a bunch of errors. But without the speaker to blare the alarm. . .it’s basically pointless.

FlipCounter is a retro, flip-clock style counter with a slew of features to be your favorite custom counter on your iPhone and iPod Touch. Unlike Flipcounter Pro, this focuses on 1 counter(but gives you more customizable features).

If you wanted. . .instead of touching it, you can shake the device to increase the numbers. You can also set how much it increases by(up to 10 at a time).

VoiceBox Dialer is a free voice dialer that gives you a hands-free voice dialer that you don’t get with the stock Phone application. They say it comes with free 411. . .but Google 411 is free anyways(great marketing though).

This is supposed to make dialing easy and hands free. I say ‘supposed to’ because for some reason I was unable to get it to work correctly. As you can see with the screenshot above, I get told to turn off WiFi and then when I turn off WiFi, it gives ‘network is slow’ errors. I imagine that’s because I use a prepaid sim card without a data plan. . .but I would think it would work with WiFi.

Converter is a quick and ultra-simplistic unit converter that is customizable so that you can make it even quicker and easier to use. I was confused at first but it was just a different approach than most of the unit converter applications take. Here all you have to do is pick the unit you want to convert, and then enter the number. After that just scroll up/down to the the unit you’re looking for it to be converted to.

Most converters make you pick a unit, enter a number, and then pick another unit. This application lists all available units on the same page so all you have to do is scroll to the one you’re looking for.

You can edit the lists of units so that you can keep your most used one at the top(to make things quicker).

PictureDialer lets you go through and pick some(or all) of your contacts and their phone numbers. So now when you open up the application it shows the pictures of those contacts and you can easily scroll through and find who you want to call(instead of just looking for their name).

Then when you touch the picture it closes the app and dials the phone number. If you look, you can see a small icon at the bottom right of the picture that indicates whether it’s their mobile number, home number, work number, etc.

This application comes with tons of settings so that you can configure things like the ‘frame’ around the pictures, the size, background color, who is in the list and more.

Alphonetic lets you learn and easily use the Phonetic Alphabet. Whether it’s listening to the letters/words or building your own phrase for easy reference this application is what you’re looking for.

I like the settings it comes with, having the ability to change the gender of the voice and adjust the volume is a plus.

I found this as an application that I could play with with a little educational enjoyment(since I really have no use for the Phonetic Alphabet). . .but the price is just too high. Again this is coming from me. Maybe there are people in certain professions that this would be very useful for but I think this would do better being free with ads.
